Anybody have any recommendations for 11 x 17 inkjet printers? I'd like to 'shrink to fit' pdf's from my office's ftp site. But squashing them to an 8 1/2 x 11 just doesn't cut it.

Ed,
I bought an Okidata 6100 dn color laser printer for about $750 in September and it has been a fabulous printer. Phenomenal color printing, fast and has duplex printing.
We've also had an Apple 8500 printer and this is giving up the ghost. Seems like it hangs on every attempt to print and I think it's come to the age where the plastic parts are simply crumbling from age.
My brother just bought an Okidata 8800 dn which will handle letter and tabloid (11 x 17) so it's pretty much the equivalent of the Apple printer but is a color printer. I wish I had bought this one instead.

If you are interested in black and white output:
My office mate, a graphic designer, has a GCC Elite xl 40N black and white laser printer, which handles 12 x 18 paper. It is great for printing at 50% reduction of 24 x 36 sheets and has completely eliminated my need for full size check sets. I had to buy 12 x 18 paper from paper.com -- no one sells that size locally here.
My office mate previously had a large format ink jet printer and found that it burned through ink cartridges quickly, due to the large paper size. The GCC laser printer is over two years old and we are still on the first toner cartridge.

Look at the HP 9800. Its about $300. Available at Staples.
Takes 11x17 & 13x19 paper. You can print 24x36 drawings @ 50% scale on 13 x19 or 18 x 24 drawings onto 11x17. Paper available from Graytex. Pretty fast performance & the ink is affordable. |

I second the HP 9800 - thing prints super fast and was fairly cheap.
Currently using an Epson Stylus Photo 1400 which can handle up to 13" width papers (Arch D halfsize) and it has been a strong performer too - even sucked a gecko up thru the gears and just kept printing. |

Thanks for the posts, the HP 9800 sounds like a good deal, especially the price. Of course I can do whatever I want to do, I just have to ask my wife if I want to.

We have had the Okidata 8800dn for about a week. It costs $2,400 from Zones. It is a Color Laser printer that we have set up to print 8.5 x 11 out of the multipurpose tray holding about 50 sheets - and 11x 17 out of Tray 1 that holds 300 sheets - all in beautiful color or B&W and duplex - and on both sides of the paper if requested.
We hope to print envelops, but the manual says they can not be gummed (too hot) and they must exit out the back of the machine - so we will need to open up the back door when we do envelops. We might just let the envelops get bent like paper does. So far we are very pleased.
We are abandoning our HP 4MV printer. Orginal cost $2500-3000 in 1994-5. It has ethernet - has one tray slot - but two trays - an 11x17 tray and an 8 1/2 x 11 - plus a multipurpose tray. The known issues are it jams frequently - might need new rubber wheels to pick up the paper - and it is now ready for its maybe 3rd Toner cartridge - so we decided to give up rather than reinvest in an old piece of equipment.
Bids wanted if this is eBay!  I'd be happy to attempt to ship it from Virginia to somebody who might want it using the Okidata Box where most of it might fit???

And today I ordered a HP 6800 for the very occasional wide format printing job and we threw the Apple 8500 in the dumpster. It was a great printer, but the plastic parts were falling apart inside, and it just would not print a single sheet any more without hanging.
In retrospect, I wish I had bought the printer that Strother bought.

Did you mean 9800? It appears that the 6340's and up don't go above 8.5 width... |

What's it use for a printer driver? The standard laser printer driver, or it's own driver software?
