Just wondering where everyone gets there copies of a particular parcel. I end up bugging the local title company for a copy of the tract map most of the time. Is there an online service I can download maps or buy cds as the maps are updated? I guess a surveyor would probably know of what I am looking for. THX... _________________ www.shouldbefree.net |

We get assessors parcel maps from the jurisdiction. Usually free but some now charge a couple bucks to fax or send it to you. These are not always reliable but of use if you don't have anything else.
Title companies would have the legal description but I didn't know they'd keep maps.
We always see if there is a recent survey, the best bet _________________ Peter B |

I know there are cd sets you can subscribe to. I just need to know the name of the service or company. Going to the city hall here is suicide. It would take 4 hrs to get in and out. Thats whay I would gladly pay for a service instead.

Have you tried the USGS folks? I'd try USGS and see if it has the appropriate level of data... it can be useful in some cases.
I've also been successful requesting digital orthophotos and related cadastral data from county folks. However the cadastral data is usually not sufficient for detailed site level work. A surveyor in the case of the latter is definitely the way to go |

Surveys are usually prepared at the owner's expense, hence the owner or previous owner should have access. Then we call the engineer or surveyor and often get a CAD copy for free if it exists. Generally people are pretty easy to work with around here on things like this.
Our city hall is OK. The county has me worried though. In that case i'd pay to not have to go there. It seems realtors make use of CD or online versions. I'll ask mine. _________________ Peter B |

There is a lot of useful information online depending upon the accuracy that you need.
Here is an address
http://gisweb.co.guilford.nc.us/sdx/viewer.htm
that you can use to explore what Guilford County is doing. There are probably similar services in your area. Zoom in some and you can also get color photos.
