I received a DWG file from a client yesterday that I could not translate. I have usually been able to work my way around problems, but maybe this is new. The client said that they (civil engr) now have to send everything to county officials (Collier County, Florida) in "State Plane NAD83 feet Florida East coordinates".

This is part of the county's GIS system. Has anyone else run into this, and is there an easy fix to allow translation?

It might have been sent to you as DNG file from microstation. They can covert it to DWG 2000. The state plan coordinates and NAD 83 should not matter unless you are adding to the coordinate drawing that they will have to open within their drawing system.
In any case the new information can be translated to their coordinate system in ACAD.

In PC6 you can set coordinates for a drawing but it is not as simple as it should be. Use coordinate offset and it will work. Being able to set the Northing (y) and Easting (x) DIRECTLY for a point in the drawing would extremely helpful to engineers who have better things to do than learn and solve the coordinate offset method provided.

It would be good to get the excavator some relief.

We would be interested in your ideas for a simpler interface. Somehow as programmers we simply don’t think in the same terms that might be needed.

Bill,
Thinking about the ideal coordinate assignment system. This is
basic idea to consider.

1. Select an object and assign coordinates Northing (y) and Easting (x) of
this point regardless of location on the drawing.
2. If possible in the same dialog, assign the rotation of the North (y)
axis.

To me, this would be quite simple... Similar to setting the 0,0 origin of the
rulers only with the desired coordinates in place of 0,0.
I know how to get the desired result using the system provided but it is not as simple (to me) as the idea I am proposing. Use would be as follows:

User Input;
1. Open the global coordinate dialog window.
2. Enter the desired coordinates for next mouse click.
3. Set the axis (y) rotation.
4. Accept the dialog settings and click the drawing using the modifier snaps to pick the correct location. (Similar to paste special)

Results:
1. The selected point's( x,y ) data is the information indicated in the
dialog box.
2. All points (x,y) data in the drawing are now based upon the new
coordinates and axis.

Does this explain my simple desire fully?
