"Page Setup" won't open so I can't set page orientation. Nothing shows up when that menu item is selected.
The default orientation under "drawing size" is landscape. But when you try to go under File-Page Setup, the page automatically converts to portrait orientation, and will not change back. To get a landscape drawing sheet, I have to pick a size under "drawing size." What if I want to use a horizontal sheet size of 8 1/2" x 14?" That is not an option under drawing size. Only under page setup .... which doesn't want to work.
Anybody know what has gone wrong here? cyn |

Do you have a printer selected in OS 9's Chooser dialog?
The data displayed in page setup is directly linked to that dialog and if nothing is specified in the Chooser things can get very weird, very quickly.
Do other Classic Applications have the same problem (e.g. SimpleText)? Printing and Chooser issues are Finder/System level so if the problem is exhibited by other applications then that will help point to a possible direction of the problems cause.
hope that helps

| If you use LPR/LPD printers in Classic, and one of those printers was the last you used before restarting, you must go back into the Chooser and reselect the LaserWriter 8 before Page Setup or Print will work. It's weird, but at least it's consistent. |

YES - thankyou! There was no printer selected in the Chooser because no printer is attached yet. I "selected" Stylewriter 1500 and the message in the chooser box indicated "no port." But the page setup did become available and functional. Am I imagining things, or did the letter size change from 8.5" x 11" to 8 x 10.47 in the page setup dialogue?? Or has it always been that way and now I am noticing things simply because it went wrong.
There is still no attached printer, and no icon in the cooser box, but selecting the icon for one seems to have primed the pump, so to speak. And therefore yes, Simpletext under classic OS 9 works with the page setup ok. I have an HP deskjet 648C which I hope to make work. |

It's worth installing Apple's LaserWRiter 8 in OS 9 (yes, even though you don't have a laserwriter attached) for the very reason of being able to select as least some sort of print driver for system reasons. You may find some of these older caddpower.com booklets helpful for OS 9 and PCadd 2000. The OS 9 section has a booklet with various articles which include information on using Apple's LaserWRiter driver for a variety of cool tricks.
it's also likely that letter size sheet dimensions changed. Every printer has a different hard clipping limit and therefore different printable areas so 8.5x11 is different for each printer
hope that helps and I'm glad you're up and running again
cheers
