I did a quick search and saw where some said there were no Mac drivers for KIP so the workflow you describe is likely your only route now.

I believe the issue with the letters not showing up ...

Although not supported any more, Engineered Software should be able to give you a link to their website for the version you need. Mike Cleveland should be able to give you a hand.
