A lot of time it comes down to the bottom line.
Clients say they want to "build green," but in the end the design goes out for bid and they pick whoever's the cheapest. It's frustrating.
There also seems to be a lot of resistance from people in both the design and construction fields. "But this is the way it's always been done. Tried and true." It's very frustrating. I think with our litigeous society, no one trusts that the new materials will act the same as the old and everyone's afraid of getting sued. There is insurance for that kind of thing, but being sued ups your premium and scares away new clients.
Maybe if you keep in contact with the architects throughout the design, you'd get better results. Often times we meet with a client at the beginning, after the entire design is done before we're about to make construction documents, and then throughout the bidding and building process. |

You may want to look at the A.S.H.R.A.E. 90.1 code this is to address energy use for buildings.
This code has 2 sides to it, 1. Electrical and 2. Mechanical.
They provide programs to ensure your "high" rise buildings will pass this code.
Seems many high-rise buildings being built in particular "condominiums" with ALL glass (say 70 to 80%) and only double pane.
My experience is....you can NOT go over 50% glass and if you do you need to go to triple or quad glass panes, otherwise the program will FAIL the building.

| Is there some reason no one ever talks about earth sheltered design? I realize the 70's oil -crisis- bunker-style are terribly ugly, but hasn't anyone really tried this out again? K-value insulation on the house keeps things at a very impressive moderate 55 degrees at all times without any energy input at all! that's huge energy efficiency. |

Sure, I saw an interesting show on Earth sheltered houses not that long ago.
It is just fairly hard to find anyone that wants one because they are not the norm. _________________ Chris Stewart
