Engineered Software would like your opinion about adding new layers. When new layers are added to the drawing should they be added at the top of the layer list or to the bottom of the layer list?
Thanks for the answers.

I'd say to the top, as when I'm adding a layer it's usually got content that I want to overlay the existing.
While we're on the subject of layers, how about a change layer tool (similar to the Wild Tools Tornado) that allows a right click function to open a pop-up to move the selected object(s) to the layer selected?

Seeing as you will never be able to read my mind as to where I want a new layer this time, I would vote for "at the top".
A possible alternative would be to insert the new layer either just above or just below the currently selected layer.
Here's one more thought: take a clue from page layout programs and have a well of pre-styled layers that the user creates as masters to choose from and have the user create new layers by dragging one of these masters into the layer list to the place they want it. I imagine the same look and feel as dragging existing layers to new locations. _________________ Rob

I'd like to see contextual menus added to the Layer window so that most of the related functions can be accessed in one spot.
Control-clicking on a layer (right mouse button for those who have 'em) would bring up a menu which could include some or all of the following and anything else considered important:
Hide
Show
Lock
Color...
Scale...
--
Add Layer [above]
Delete
Rename...
--
Add to sheet...
Remove from sheet...
I guess this isn't what you asked Mike but the Add Layer [above] menu item would give the user interactive control of where a new layer would fall.

| I would like the option for alphabetical order for new layers. |

I would say "top" or "top of the displayed" layer window if it is collapsed down or there are a lot of layers. In either case it is easy enough to move. If the wondow is collapsed down I do not like to have to scroll to get it then click and hold to move the layer. Getting to the new layer is the most important thing to me.

Given your other post regarding that layers turned off will be moved towards the bottom of the list, I'd vote for the top of the list for added layers. This way, I can easily see the added layer, but if I go to a predefined sheet setup, it won't be in the way at the top (as it currently is).
Hey, thanks for asking!

| Speaking of new layers... I've never understood why a brand new-ly created layer does not become the active layer at the moment of creation. Most of the time I create a new layer for the purpose of drawing in it right away... so manually activating that new layer right after creating it therefore seems like wasted time/motion. |

The problem is when you have a really long list of layers... longer than the screen... Any new layer added at either at the top or bottom will not be seen. I would like to see the new layer created right in the middle of the list that I am browsing, and then I can drag it up or down it to the location I want.
From a CAD instructors point of view: a command should display immediate
results, visible on the screen. I have seen too many people scroll down to the bottom of the layer list and then start clicking (and clicking, and clicking, and clicking...) the New Layer button and then ask me where all the new layers are?!

Byron, that is exactly what I meant above but I said the top of the layer list. The middle would be fine too as long as I can see it added and can drag it where I want.
Making the new layer the active layer makes all kinds of sense to me.

Now that is an incredibly good idea.

Rob's idea makes great sense.

As soon as I finished I thought, "Now that would make Bill and ES happy: if the only way to make a new layer is to drag one into place, then no one can complain any more about where PC made a new layer since the user has to put them where they end up." _________________ Rob

Dragging a layer from somewhere into location as a method to create a new layer sounds like a natural. Wonder what the interface might look like? Wonder what downsides might be encountered?
